Publisher: Tableaux Argentés Publishing
Editor in Chief: Paul Komick
Publishing frequency: Twice a year
Published since: 2011
Based in: New York & Berlin
A fresh newcomer in the scene of travel magazines. Especially the layout and the printing paper of this magazine are to my taste. It only appears twice a year, but is always worth waiting for. Every single edition contains a section ”12 hotels” – fantastic tips on cool new ones and traditional classics. In addition there are great articles and blanc pages for your own travel log. A travel magazine doesn’t get much better than this…
Publisher: Condé Nast
Editor in Chief: Pilar Guzman
Publishing frequency: Monthly
Published since: 1987
Based in: 4 Times Square, New York
Total circulation: 820.000
Publisher: Condé Nast Publications Ltd., from Vogue House, Mayfair, London
Editor: Melinda Stewens
Publishing frequency: Monthly
Based in: Mayfair, London
Total circulation: 78.000
Even if I photographied here the US version, I kind of prefer myself the UK version. What is noticeable, is that the distinction between these two editions is made most easily by the spelling of word traveler: in UK edition cover the British version Traveller and in US version Traveler with one l. The UK edition contains mainly original UK content.
Both editions are quite ”traditional” travel magazines, full of stories, photos and ads and not much of innovation in the lay out. The information content is good, but in my opinion this magazine would need to step into this decade for what comes to its’ appearance.
3. Monocle
Publisher: Winkontent Ltd
Editor in Chief: Tyler Brûlé
Publishing: 10 times a year
Published since: 2007
Based in: 1 Dorset Street, London
Total circulation: 73.000
Do not forget the yearly published two large format newspapers Monocle Mediterraneo and Monocle Alpino. Monocle is an exhausting package of information and well written articles, which as a foreign language reader requires an intense concentration while reading – but is well worth the time taken. Also worth checking out are the monocle podcasts found e.g. in iTV. Even if I strongly share Monocles’ passion for Japan, there is one slight minus that I need to point out – that is the fact that the magazine always looks and feels the same. Maybe Monocle should take a step out of its’ comfort zone…
4. Mondo
Publisher: A-kustannus Oy
Editor in Chief: Kati Kelola
Publishing frequency: 10 times a year
Based in: Helsinki
Total circulation: 30.000
For a travel magazine of a small nation (5M people), Mondo is almost of an international wide circulation travel magazine. With its matte printing paper, high quality photos and good content, it is in general very enjoyable to read.
Some topics however tend to repeat themselves too often and sometimes interesting articles mentioned on the cover are finally just empty shells – just to mention one, a one page article on ski resorts in Japan, which in the end did not offer any valuable information.
5. Where
Publisher: Morris Visitor Pubications, Asia City Media Group, St. Jospeh Media
Publishing: Monthly
Based in: Toronto, Canada
Total circulation: 2.190.000
An excellent free travel magazine distributed in many hotels and restaurants in several cities such as New York, Moscow, St Petersburg, Hong Kong, London and Paris. This is a perfect way to find good restaurants and bars in a city you are visiting – but be aware, you need to know how to read it properly… In Moscow for example, avoid at any cost the places marked ”expat hangouts” unless you are a male traveler seeking for local company for the night! And the reaturants putting up big ads in this magazine, might not be the ones offering you the most auhentic experience.
And finally the dark horse of the travel magazine category:
Coté Paris, Coté Sud, Coté Est and Coté Ouest
Publisher: L’Express
These french interior design magazines offer fantastic articles on travel in France and in some of the DOM and TOM countries – not even to mention the articles on interior design. Every issue presents one specific area, town or village in France, with hotel and restaurant suggestions – and those photos are to die for! This is a must for a fanatic friend of France…
