A golf-enthusiastic knows well the achievements of the South African born golf legend Ernie Els, ”The Big Easy”. In addition to his golfing skills (66 wins in his career, including 4 majors), he is widely considered as a perfect gentleman – he even runs a charitable foundation in South Africa, supporting golf among underprivileged youngsters.  But what I did not know, before a holiday in South Africa a few years ago, is that among his golf course design company and charity work, he has owned a winery in Stellenbosch since 1999.

As I have always considered Ernie Els – especially since having met him personally – a respectable sports and business man, I wanted to take a look at his winery, even if it was not among the biggest and most visited wineries in the area. Finding the property was a bit challenging, but when we finally arrived there, we were more than happy to have made the effort.

The scenery is fantastic – the photos will hopefully paint you a picture better than words. In addition to those breath-taking views, the atmosphere is pleasant, food is enjoyable and the best of all – the quality of the wines was an extremely positive surprise!

Especially Ernie Els Signature 2010 red and Ernie Els proprietor’s Syrah 2010 were wines that will surely remain among my favorite ones. The links connect to a different vintage unfortunately, but you will at least see the etiquette.

Unfortunately – despite very nice photos – the Internet site of this winery does not do justice to the atmosphere in the actual location and the quality of the wines.
